Water pump Wammy!

Hi Folks,

Well here we go again. I'm the guy with the rapping water pump with the sub standard stainless shaft.I rebuilt the pump with a new stainless shaft, new roller bearings etc, Not the new bearing with the hardened sleeve as suggested by Dave Sturges (Sorry Dave!)My vendor replaced the original parts free of charge.

I start up the car only to hear the same rapping.Everything is brand new. With the fan belt off the sound goes away. The sound seems to eminate from the front bearing but it's hard to tell as the moving solid cast aluminum fan seem to throw the sound. What are the chances of this thing failing twice the instant the engine starts? After the car is shut off after a half hour drive for 10-15 minuted the fan blades are extremely hot to the touch.Almost too hot to hold. Can any of you with a solid cast aluminum fan test this for me?

Could it be the timing gear plunger is making the noise. How would I test it? With the timing pin? Also my crank shaft pully has some slight play in it.If I rock the fan back and forth by the blades the pully rocks also.Very little movement, but quite freely. The starter ratchet is very tight on the pully.Anyone care to take a stab at this one.I'm pulling what's left of my hair out.How can I enjoy my brand new valves ticking away with this darned rapping?

Thanks in advance,

Kevin Daly
