Kevin

I bought a new "leakless" stainless steal shaft water pump and after about six months I developed the same tapping noise...my noise also sounded like it was coming front the front bearing.

After pulling it off and putting it on several times...I noticed that I did NOT get the tapping when the 4 nuts that hold on the pump were not tightened!Hmmmm...from this I figured out that the pump IMPELLER blades were hitting something inside the engine...and after about four tries of grinding the edges of the blades off...little by little....that solved the problem!
I could test it with out having to put the fan belt on as I could hear that darned tapping just by turning the fan by hand.
Grinding off a bit of the impeller blades from what I've read causes no harm...as a matter of fact...some A'ers even suggest this if one is pumping too much water out the overflow...but I think that only gives an "asprin" to the headache and doesn't solve the overflow CAUSE (which is probably a bad radiator).

Let us know what you've done and if it works.

Dennis
