Kevin,

There is a way to find the where the noise is without the use of special equipment such as a stethoscope. Get a wooden dowl about 3 feet long, a piece of an old broom handle will do. Put one end against the front of the water pump, or any place that you want to search for the noise. Then put the other end up against your ear. The sound will go through the solid wood and you will be able to 'hear' what is going on at that spot in the engine. I usually put my thumb over the end of the stick and then put my ear on my thumb (should not put sticks in your ear). You can test various parts of the engine and find out where the sound is coming from. Be careful, use a dowl long enough so you do not get your head in the way of moving parts. I know it sounds weird but it works. By the way the first stehoscopes were just a wooden dowl.

Bob
