: Hi Kevin,
: I've missed your earlier correspondence so I may be way off track here. However considerthe possibilty that the camshaft timing gear may be worn and also could be an Alluminium one instead of fibre. In engines fitted with the metal gear, running at idle can often produce a loud knock as the camshaft tends to be pushed ahead by the strength of the valve springs on the lifters. This problem can also be experienced when an engine has been line bored beyond the required centres between crank and camshaft, so producing excess backlash in the gear train.

Kevin,
Going past what Mike suggested last week we had a car come inwith a loud rapping noise in the front of the engine at idle speed. As the motor revved up the noise got quieter come to find out the timing gear retainer nut had come loose, an easy fix to a scary noise.Good Luck JP
