protecting the paint on freshly painted wheels

Posted by doug handran on August 04, 1998 at 18:57:03

hello,

when i was painting my wheels, i was careful
not to build any primer or paint in the lug nut areas
and the rim edges as recommended in the
wheel restoration article in vol 2 of
_how to restore your model "a"_.

now that the wheels are finished, i
started to mount the tubes and tires today.

even though i was careful with my tire iron
and was working from the backside of the wheel,
i still managed one or two chips on each
rim.

my question is that if even careful use of
the tire iron will chip the paint on the rims,
what precautions do i need to take when
tightening down the lug nuts so that the
paint here does not chip as well?

thanks,
