: hello,

: when i was painting my wheels, i was careful
: not to build any primer or paint in the lug nut areas
: and the rim edges as recommended in the
: wheel restoration article in vol 2 of
: _how to restore your model "a"_.

: now that the wheels are finished, i
: started to mount the tubes and tires today.

: even though i was careful with my tire iron
: and was working from the backside of the wheel,
: i still managed one or two chips on each
: rim.

: my question is that if even careful use of
: the tire iron will chip the paint on the rims,
: what precautions do i need to take when
: tightening down the lug nuts so that the
: paint here does not chip as well?

:
: thanks,

Hi Doug
When I put the tires on my 29 wheels,I sprayed the wheel edges with Pledge Furniture polish, let it dry and polished with a cloth. I was then able to force the new tires on with my hands and feet.(no tire iorns) To help prevent cracking paint around wheel nuts give the nuts and the area around the holes a good coat of vasoline. This will work on any painted surface. Simple solutions but they will work.
