steering shaft rethreading?

Now I've done it.In trying to remove my steering wheel from the shaft, I've broken off the entire threaded portion of the shaft. I've heard this can be repaired, but what's the procedure? What thread pitch is it? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks! Bob East
