G'Day Bob,
I had the same trouble with 2 steering shafts I took the wheel off & repaired as follows. Gas weld the broken piece back onto the shaft fitting the break together, then build up weld over the entire threaded section up to the start of the taper so that the threads are no longer visible. If you don't have a lathe take the shaft to a machine shop & have them machine what used to be the threaded portion back to 5/8" & cut a 5/8" N.F. thread (I can't remember how many t.p.i. it is) on it back to the taper. While the shaft is in the machine they can re-drill the end back to around 25/64" or 10mm.
