Water pump rbuild

I recently purchased a water pump rebuild kit from Bratton's that contains a collar with a set screw that goes on the shaft at the front of the pump to eliminate shaft end play.My question is this.Should that collar replace the normal cupped bearing retainer or be put on in addition to it.There were no instructions with the kit and both parts came with it.If anyone has used one of these before I would appreciate some help.Thanks.
