Hi Barry -

I'm not familiar with the specific kit, but have seen collars used to control end play. There's quite a bit of room inside the fan hub for the collar. My "A" came with a couple of large nuts stuffed inside the fan hub, and the end of the pump all torn up from the wear.

In any case, you should use the cupped washer and the felt installed normally to control the lubrication of the front bearing.

After that, if you can find them, I'd install at least two thin flat hardened steel shim washers (you can get them at bearing suppliers from Torrington) outside the cupped washer, then the collar - this to minimize wear on the end of the pump.

Finally, I'd install the collar, and tighten it lightly. Then remove it, and file a flat on the shaft in the set-screw location so you can get it apart later. If the set-screw is a slotted head type, throw it away, and replace it with a hardened allen dog-point type set-screw. Install with Loctite blue.About 0.010" end play is right.

On the other hand, you could set up the end play the normal way by adjusting the pump shaft end to contact the boss inside the head which is actually the better way in the long run unless your head is really worn.
