I personally wouldn't lighten the flywheel with out modifications to the crankshaft. If you have counterweights added to the crankshaft you NEED to lighten the flywheel at least as much as the weight that was added to the crankshaft. I wouldn't want to go more than an extra 10 pounds but there are probably others that have experimented more and can advise you on that. The down side is the idle won't be quite as slow and smooth, and deceleration may be a little rougher but proper balancing will help the later.

As far as balancing, the pistons are matched, connecting rods are matched each end and total weight, and the crankshaft is balanced. The flywheel should be balanced ON THE crankshaft with the pressure plate. If this isn't done correctly it likely won't be as smooth as an original (unmolested) engine. Most cars I've driven whether balanced or not were mediocre at best.
