: Why not lighten the flywheel without crankshaft mods? Or, why other than the way the clutch is designed, does the flywheel need to be as big as it is? Anybody know the difference(if any) in weight between the clutch/pressure plate/flywheel assemby and the multiple disk clutch/flywheel? If they are the same I'd suggest that Ford made the weight the same for a reason...If they are different then perhaps it is simply making the flywheel however it needed to be to fit the spacing intended for the multiple disk clutch.

It is true that lightening the flywheel will give the car more zip, but only in acceleration. It allows the engine to rev faster. The downside of this is that once you get into the mountains, you will lose speed faster than someone who has a stock flywheel.Like they mentioned below you must add counterwieghts to the crankshaft. The total wieght of the model a flywheel was about 62 lbs.I have seen them lightened to as little as 30 lbs. without problems, but I wouldn't go any lower than that.
