Since Ford abandoned the steel on steel ball himself, you already have a good answer.

I've always used the rubber joint in my "A"s just because it's a better system than the original and I'm a daily driver. It's also quieter, and easier on the flywheel housing.

Concerns about alignment are baseless since the actual change in castor as a result of the rubber ball and its mount is much less than can occur from variations in front springs.

I DO think, though, that while you can use the rubber on a worn ball, it's better to rebuild the ball to spec, AND THEN use the rubber joint.I brazed mine back to size and filed it with a 1.5" (if I recall properly)diameter template.

The rubber joint is designed to accept an unworn ball end.If you use it with a worn ball, it'll be quieter but still permit motion. My radius rad ball looked a lot like a walnut before restoration.
