Hi Jack -

I think the deterioration is more likely related to the oil that gets all over the rubber.Mine is also tight, BUT not unreasonably so without shims.If your radius rod ball is worn irregularly it could be setting up "pinches" that would tend to tear the ball.

I wouldn't drive the car with the joint loose since that's a lot like hammering on the bottom of your bell housing.If you can't replace the ball liner, the old "Fender Washer" trick will tighten up the thing temporarily.

Put a few pre-cupped Fender Washers (large O.D. small hole)in the cap portion of the socket with generous greasing. This will take up the play, and cushion the shocks until you replace the ball.
