Radius rod ball cap

There are two types of radius ball cap kits listed by the
suppliers -The original type& a replacement type which has a
rubber ball to go over the steel ball.
When I rebuilt my car 6 years ago I used the latter assuming
that the ball was worn (never assume anything).I noticed at the time it was snug but assumed (there's that word again)
that this was normal.Today (and 10000 miles later I found part
of the rubber ball laying under the car.My question is after
all the wear the steel ball has been sujected to over the
years should I have used the original type kit,and other than
the replacement type having the shim ball what is the differences in these types
