Gas tank filler screen

What is the proper method for removing the gas tank filler screen located just below the gas cap on an early 1931 pickup? I have seen a couple of articles on gas gauge repair and all the articles simply say, "...remove the screen, then...", but I haven't been able to hook, pull, or unscrew the blasted thing.
