How long should a 6 V battery last

How long should a 6 V battery last?I replaced mine about
2 years ago with a new Delco battery and it's beginning
to not hold its charge.(I must admit that I haven't been
driving the car much lately, but I've been recharging the
battery every month or so).
I've also noticed on the posting board that some folks have
found inexpensive 6 V batteries at Walmart or PepBoys, but neither store has them in stock. Are they a special order?
I'm told that they are made by Exide.
