Frank,
You gots to have your "helper" on this one. Have your helper move the wheel back and forth and you sight for the lost motion.

Even though you said there isn't much adjustment on the "box", I found them to go awack tightenin the sets and would introduce considerable play. It takes several tries to get the "feel" for the adjustments.

Did you get your books? In there they outline a procedure for the adjustments, they go into detail. Basically there is 4 adjustments, shaft endplay, sector endplay, mesh and steering play which has to be done on the bench.

While in the car; steering shaft endplay, steering wheel centered, sector link detached ( I just lift the front wheels off the ground ) And adjusted to where the wheel binds then back off.

The sector endplay is adjusted to no in and out movement of shaft then back off a hair. HERE"S A WATCH OUT!!! The thrust screw wears funny at the point of touching the sector. Remove it and file it flat, the center of the sector is not the center of the adjuster wearing a nipple to say and goofs up your feel.

Next to the mesh, this is the one you got to do several times to get the feel and then loose it when tighting the sets. The steering wheel in the mid position, adust the eccentric to where it binds the wheel back and forth then back off, Takes mucho tries to get this one. Last check is lock to lock should not get real tight or seize. Note the steering is tight in the center and goes looser towards the locks.

All this bla bla is for the 2 tooth, ain't done a 7 tooth so I can't say anything for them.

If you still have play, with the wheels in the air, stands on the frame, does the whole axle move? Saw that once with a busted crossmember at the spring clamps and wobbly radius ball.

Just be tenacious and you'll get there,
GW
PS When done take "helper" for a bite.
