Rick,
From your post it sounds like you tried an leak stop kit or some type of tip. The box originally didn't have a seal in it.
The leather was to stop grit from getting in but let oil pass.
In the days of the A it was common practice to add oil and grease, leaking was OK. Most of the problem will be wear in the bushings and shaft. Do you have side to side play with the shaft? If so, attention to restore these tolorences will be needed.

I went with the needle bearing and oil seal that Bratten's offers with an exchange of your old housing. It doesn't leak but there is some question if the bearings are good to run with. I don't have many miles on the box yet so I can't tell you if it is the way to go. I did this before I knew about the board.

If I do this again I would restore it with the bushings and go with the seal (not the o-ring).

The O-ring would work the hole in the frame for the shaft was the exact same size as the shaft, then the frame would compress the O-ring in the housing on to the shaft. But the hole in the frame is large due to all the tolerance build in the final assembly of the A.

A note about the repo shafts, I hear that they need some working to get to work and they wear quickly, I haven't any experience with them so I don't know.
Good luck,
GW
