31 coupe interior question

I'm replacing the interior in my late '31 coupe. In the doorposts is wood, one piece in the upper above the latch and another below the latch. To fill the void between the wood was a rubber piece, it also tied to the wood around the quarter window. The rubber is hard as a rock and seems to made of a special compound because it has hold tacks for the interior panels. I can't find a replacement or what is used to make this part? I was thinking of using old tires to fab something but wonder if someone has done something better.
