Glen,
The original filler pieces were made of a hard rubber. However in the wood kit I bought for my 1928 Coupe the filler piece is made of hard wood and attaches with a wood screw each into the top and bottom wood piece. Be very careful when nailing into this piece as it is not very strong and could break or crack.
