My main concern is on the sequence of removal.Should I disconnect from the frame first and lower the rear end with spring still attached to the hangers, or disconnect at hangers first and then lower rear end and remove from frame?I have a good rear spring spreader and my guess is that there are several sequences

Technically, it should be possible to do it either way.The fact that you have a spring spreader makes the job a lot less problematical and gives you more choices.

However...

My impression is that it might be easiest to jack the body/frame up to the point where the hangers start to "turn" (indicating they are now not carrying the load) and then apply the spreader but don't overly tighten it.Then using the jack or whatever you're lifting the body with in concert with the spring spreader, get the hangers to the point where they can be driven out with a drift or bar.

The big problem with removing the old hangers is that they frequently are quite worn and have shoulders which prevent their easily being driven out.In this case you're using both the jack and the spreader to find the point where the worn shoulder does not interfere with removal.

If you remove the spring from the frame, then you have to find that point by holding the spring in one hand and manipulate the spreader with the other.Do-able, certainly. But I'm not sure I want to get that close and personal to the spring in case the spreader slips.

Once the hangers are driven out, relax the spreader and unbolt the spring from the body. The new spring goes back in in the reverse of all of this.

Be sure to have more than one means of support underneath the body/frame just in case the jack slips or fails.See previous discussion thread under "jacking" where myself and several others discuss the safety aspects of lifing the Model A car.

I have used a couple of reproduction front springs with no detectable difference in ride or fit under my Model A but have no experience with the reproduction rear spring.

Work safely,
Joe
