Thanks Joe for the write up, You're good at the typing which I ain't. Instead of driving out the shackles use a large c-clamp and press them apart, this is less shock to boing the spring.
Also note the wear on the shackles, if the spring is shot more than likely the shakles are too. Replace them.
The c-clamps works during assembly too.
