Tom,

I've been told that this is usually a sign of air getting into the carburetion system. This leak more than likely is getting in around the shaft that the throttle butterfly is attached to.

With the engine off, remove the control rod from the throttle arm at the carburetor.Rotate the throttle arm clockwise until it hits the stop. This opens the butterfly inside the carb and lets the air gas mixture into the intake manifold. With the throttle in the full open position, grab the whole rotated assembly and shake it from side to side and up and down.If there is any noticable play, you have excessive ware on the brass shaft that goes through the whole in the upper casting.Maybe even ware on the hole itself. This is where the air gets in and renderes the adjusting screw practically useless. In my experience the majority of the ware is in the 1/2 to full throttle section of the shaft. If you think about it the majority of your driving takes place with the throttle shaft right in that particular zone. That's why there is more ware in that area also.

If in fact you do have play there are replacement shafts for about $10.00 bucks both original and oversized. There are also bushings for the hole.If the shaft is worn it should be replaced or repaired. There are some recent postings just below on the subject.

Good luck,

Kevin Daly
