Hi Frank,

Glad you're on the right track now. This may be the cause of you differing RPM's but not necessarily. The problem should be fixed regardless. The whistling is more than likely the air passing by the curb idle gas/air mixture needle.

On a Zenith carb the tone of the whistle will change with the turning of that screw. You may however get some air whistling by the throttle shaft if there's excessive play.Sorry to sound non commital like a politician but it really could be a combination of things.

Even if it is a combination of things you'll still have a better running car with the shaft play removed so I'd start there. If you order an oversized shaft I believe the standard is to enlarge the hole, not turn the shaft.Or solder and file the the existing shaft back to true.Or put a bushing in the hole if it's worn. The decision really can't be made until the carb is dissasembled and the precise problem areas isolated.Don't buy anything until you do that. The air leak will affect the idle most of all.In may case there was so much more play at full open then at idle that I feel it could have affected my top end speed as well.Who Knows?

Good Luck and keep up posted,

Kevin Daly
