: Can anyone comment on how to connect the exhaust pipe to the manifold?I have the 2-part ring clamp installed, and it pulls the two parts together nicely, but maybe not air-tight.

: Should there be a high-temp gasget in there, or a metal sleeve under the clamp? Could an air leak here cause backfiring? If there were a leak (I'm not sure there is), would it blow exhaust out, or suck air in?

Paul,
It sounds as if you already have the exhaust pipe clamped to the manifold. If there is no movement at the joint, it possibly is tight enough. My experience has been if the two "mating surfaces are as original", there will be no leaks. If a leak is present, it can be heard if big enough. If it is a small one, small black soot will appear around the area where the exhaust gases come out.It will not suck air in.
Back to the "mating surfaces".The manifold can have uneven surfaces (wear) caused by a loose exhaust pipe.Generally, it takes years to do it.The problem can be remidied by resurfacing the flange area with a file or grinder. The reproduction exhaust pipes often have a flange that does not have enough surface area where it mates with the manifold. With a dolly and hammer the flange area can be increased to original and thus eliminnate any leaks.Hope this helps.
Have fun!
Paul
