Exhaust pipe - manifold connection

Can anyone comment on how to connect the exhaust pipe to the manifold?I have the 2-part ring clamp installed, and it pulls the two parts together nicely, but maybe not air-tight.
Should there be a high-temp gasget in there, or a metal sleeve under the clamp? Could an air leak here cause backfiring? If there were a leak (I'm not sure there is), would it blow exhaust out, or suck air in?
