Misfiring & backfiring uphill in 3rd gear

Took the old girl out this weekend.Started up fine and drove
well for about 10 min. Stopped at a gas station and added
2 gal gas.When I pulled out of the station, the car
ran funny going uphill while in 3rd gear.If I let up on the
accelerator, slowed down and accelerated, the problem went
away.Ran well for another 10 min, then while going up a
long hill, the sputtering came back and there was a small
back fire.Somewhat shaken I drove the car home instead of
continuing my trip.
What causes intermittent missing and backfiringin 3rd gear while hill climbing?Is this a fuel or electrical problem
and why does it only occur in this circumstance?
