Clunk Clunk

I have just finished checking the Main and Rod journal clearance on a 6K mile professionally rebuilt engine. All clearances were in tolerance. With the head and oil pan removed I adjusted the tappets to a (tight ) .012 intake and (tight) .014 setting, making sure the cam lobe heal was directly under each lifter. Rechecked the settings using a .011 and .013 respectively to assure there were no tight or loose tappets. During the checking process I noted that there was a gap larger than .014 when the cam lobe was turned off the heal and slightly on to the slope. The engine starts and runs great. The problem…a pronounced clunking occurs at slow idle speed. It goes away at fast idle and no knocking occurs when accelerating or decelerating or at a steady engine speed of approximately 1200 rpm. The knocking stops when shorting #3 or #4 spark plugs. Shorting #1 or #2 has no effect on the knocking. I suspect wear on the camshaft lobes or perhaps the timing gear is causing the problem. Would like to hear your comments before tearing it back down.
