: Hi Paul,

: Ocasionally we get so involved in and engine adjustment that we don't think outside the box. We're all guilty of it! I've lost many nights of sleep thinking about a similar knock. The engine was just rebuilt but this clunking started and stopped in a very similar fashion to yours. I know it's a real long shot but perhaps you have the same problem I did. It's easy enough to check and doesn't require an engine tear down.

As you can tell by the post timings it wasn't long till I got home from work and without even changing clothes I tried your suggestion. You were right on target! I remember using the front ratchet nut with the special socket wrench to turn the engine while adjusting lifters. I evidently loosened it in the process. No more CLUNK CLUCK. Thanks for turning my thinking from one direction to another. It certainly helps to "get another opinion". This board continues to do a great service to the participants and to the hobby. Hat's off to you Kevin.

: My knocking was caused by my crankshaft pully. It is a 2 piece design so it can be removed without lifting the front of the engine. The tolerances on the mating pieces was just large enough to set up a knocking noise at idle. I swore up and down that it was piston slap or rod knock!

: If you have a 2 piece pully, shine a flashlight down on it and slowly wiggle the fan back and forth. The slight movement of the fan belt will transfer through the pully and you can actually see a slight movement. Even with movement you won't hear a knocking sound. It only happens under load. I removed both pieces and peened the mating pieces until they were tight. Guess What? No more knocking.

: I know it's really a long shot but you must admit, stranger things have happened and it's simple to check. You dont even need a ratchet! Please keep us up to date!

: Good Luck,

: Kevin Daly
