My Rear End is Killing Me!

Hi Folks,

I've had the engine and tranny out of my 30 coupe for a few months as the result of a complete rebuild.Once the engine was removed the front of the torque tube was resting on top of the recess in the brake cross shaft. I jacked up the rear end and put jack stands under the rear axle (Highest setting) so that I could get to the muffler bracket (I'm a big boy you know!) and the car had remained in that position for at least 2-1/2 months.

Recently after lowering the car off the jack stands, I noticed that rear end oil (NOT the 600 weight good stuff, but a much thinner lube) has appeared to leak from the banjo past the tapered bearing in the flared bell of each trumpet, down the inside taper and out of the narrow end of the trumpets, past the new (properly installed) modern axle seals and down the back of the rear brake backing plates and back down the trumpets lower outside taper back towards the banjo and down my jack stands. (Whew!, That's a mouthfull!)Only a few ounces total between both side seems to have leaked.I rebuilt the rear end about a year ago and seem to recall a small hole inside the trumpet near the tapered axle bearings to aerate or equalize pressures within the banjo.

I think with the front of the torque tube resting lower than usual on the brake cross shaft and the rear end jacked up so high that the oil level was above these small holes and started the leaking. Can anyone confirm this scenario for me?I dont believe any oil worked its way to the brakes.Should I remove the drums and inspect for oil?.God I hope not! There's always that one thing that people hate to do on their "A's" and mine is pulling those darned drums.I know, I know pullem anyway! Better safe than sorry.

As always, thanks for any help you can give and especially for all the help given to date.

Sincerely,

Kevin Daly
