: I am redoing a front end and have discovered that the king pin holes at the ends of the axle are worn oversize. The old king pins were held in place with what looks like brass shims made especially for that purpose, but no one I can find knows anything about such shims. I'd really like to keep this axle since it is the car's original and it is straight. I've had a couple of suggestions for fixes. One is to have a machine shop true up the holes and sleeve them to the proper size (whatever that may be).The other is to have a machine shop enlarge the holes and press in spindle bolt bushings. Does anyone know if either of these alternatives is preferable, or if there is another fix I don't know about? Thanks.

Joe really said it all...thats just the thing to do...lots of folks have a spare..just find a good one and rebuild it...
be careful when you tighten the pinch bolts that lock the king pin....Ford should have made one with left and one with right threads...what happens is when you tighten the pinch bolt you move the pin just slightly...one one side it is fine as it pushes the pin up...but on the other side it tightens the king pin down..and sometimes makes it very hard to turn...making hard steering...I use a small spacer under the pin...then remove it once the locking bolt it tight...gives me a slight bit of clearance and free movement...Joel
