Mr. MMR,
They way I read, Your A was a smooth runner before the updates? Maybe the vibration was being masked by all the other "stuff", if not what one item did the deed? You notice retarding the timing calms her, timed with a timing light for good starting. MMMM....sounds light a GREEN WENNIE in the ignition system. Timing with a light should not be better than the static method unless there is a lot play in the cam /distributer. Is the cam spring good at the front? You said you resurfaced your head, are you using the one piece dist. shaft? I've seen a couple of cars where the resurfacing of head and or deck caused the distributer not to seat and no matter how tight the set screw wobbled causing wear in the bearings kissing the dwell good bye. The one piece does not compensate for the off sets, that is why they are not good to run. Speaking of dwell, hook one up, should be consistant and not change when tached up. If not suspect the lobe cam, the repos are not the same on all four lobes. And of coarse check for shaft wobble.
Probably waded up to you know where but A's are so much fun to tinker on.
GW
