gas leakage from glass sediment bowl

I have a repro glass sediment bowl(USA made)that I am having trouble with as far as leakage.It came with a new seal (neoprene), and I have installed that and have tightened up the bowl fairly tight.I am afraid of making it too tight and putting it under stress and then hitting a bump in the road and having it break.Of course the exhaust manifold and muffler are right below it, an obviously dangerous situation.Any suggestions to stop the leakage?Are the neoprene seals the best kind to use?Thanks for any help.
