28AR Brake Cross Shaft

I have a '28AR.The brake cross-shaft does not have any bushings under the outboard support brackets.Should I add split bronze bushings or would bushings interfere with the "equalizing" design of this early AR cross-brake shaft?Your thoughts would be appreciated!
