Liability issues I'm sure - Bill H. has been running welded ballsof the drill and insert type for the last couple of years on his '30 tudor, and I've installed set, but had to go two places to get them. The other way that I've seen is to turn down the ball so that it becomes a straight shaft, then place a hollow ball over the shaft and weld it in place - this is apparently what the folks at Bratton's do when you send them a set of arms.Bottom line if your welder knows his job, I wouldn't worry since the shank goes through the arm, even if the weld breaks, it should stay together in the short term. You need to watch out for clearance on the steering horn for the drag link since it gets very close to the spring perch. The Restorer has had some suggestions over the years that are downright dangerous where the weld does all the holding. One of the folks at the club reamed his arms for taper balls which seem to work O.K.
