The color of the dash rail on open cars (Roadsters and Phaetons) is an area of uncertainty.I can't say it is a "grey" area can I?The first hint of a problem comes if you consult the Judging Standards Manual.Page 12-4 addresses dash rail color. It says that dash rails of 28/29 Standard models and early 1930 Cabs were body color and all other models were painted the moulding color indicated in the Trim Schemes---but the trim schemes for roadsters and phaetons do not have moulding colors. I then moved onto the Paint and Finish guide and still did not find a real easy answer. However, on page four "1930-1931 Open Cars"I found
" Ford specified that the belt rail (directly under the windshield) on Phaetons be painted body color and on Roadsters it was to be trim color. In examining archive photos and original cars, it is obvious that Ford's specifications were not always followed to the letter."The color of the belt rail under the windshield sometimes went to the dash rail and sometimes not.
Sounds like both sides are right!Seems like the guys at the factory did what they thought looked best.If it was good enough for them, ought to be OK for you.

: I am restoring a 31 Deluxe Roadster and am about ready for paint.I am not sure what color to paint the piece called the front belt rail (according the the diagram in The Model A as Henry Built It) also sometimes called the dash rail (I think). Anyway, it is the piece between the windshield stanchions.Should it be body color or trim color?I was at a car show last weekend and saw seven 30-31 roadsters. Some had it body color, some trim color and all of the owners insisted they were correct but couldn't tell me how they knew they were correct.I know someone out there can give me the definitive answer! Thanks, Barry
