Cutouts with Diodes - how is it done?

I looked at a diode (solid-state) cutout conversion kit at my local Model A parts dealer. (rather a rare breed of retailer, I must admit...)It contained some nuts and bolts, but the main ingredient seemed to be a 1N1183A "top-hat" diode. Is the conversion as simple as in installing a diode between the generator output terminal and the battery terminal inside the cutout?If I buy a diode with equivalent specifications and install it (in the correct direction) will it work?Will my 1931 Tudor bounce off my garage roof before being consumed in flames?Any electronic-type folks out there?
