: I have just started to disassemble the engine ...I tried to get the rachet nut off ... Is the nut a regular right handed bolt?I don't want to bend the crank. The pulley was broken so I have access to the nut.I even used an 18" pipe wrench, but it is too tight. Does someone have a good suggestion on how to get the nut off?

Hi Glenn,

Been here before many years ago;however, had a two (2) piece pulley.Ratchet nut is right handed and tightens when engine is cranked in clockwise direction.Probably other solutions, but if my memory is accurate, the following worked

1.Carefully break off round belt groove around spokeson pulley with ball pein hammer.

2.Firmly support crankshaft on edge of a 2x4 or 4x4, 12to 24 inches long, firmly supported on a concretesurface. With sharp cold chisel, carefully mark lineand cut top side of front half of pulley, (betweenrear of ratchet nut and joint between pulley halves),parallel to crankshaft.
3.Carefully split front half of pulley lengthwise withcold chisel and remove to relieve tension on ratchetnut.May have to cut pulley with cuts 180 degreesfrom one another to entirely remove pulley fronthalf.

Probably could also cut 360 degree perimeter groove with hack saw in joint between ratchet nut and pulley, almost down to crank shaft, to relieve nut tension and reduce surface friction area.

Let us know how you removed it.

Best wishes,

H. L. Chauvin
