window handles

I recently installed an LB interior on my '30 tudor. My problem, believe it or not, is that I can't seem to get the window handles attached. I've tried pressing as hard as possible, but it seems that the escutcheon will not go back toward the panel far enough for me to slip the handle on. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong. I would certainly appreciate any help I could get.

PS. The car didn't have an interior (panels, handles, etc.) when I bought it.
