Articles in the Restorer states that some Model A engines run well with the dash control turned all the way off. Make sure your wiring is correct. The firing order is 1 2 4 3. I just went through that experience when my engine ran rich, only to find I had # 3 and 4 wires reversed. Also, make sure yoyr carburetor is "squeaky clean", and the timing is "right on".
