Gasket Sealer?

I just had my 4 cly overhauled and I am about to put it back together. Someone told me that there is a special coating you put on the gaskets to help them seal. He said the head gasket? Is there a need for a sealing compound and is it just for the head gasket or all gaskets. Thanks, Tony
