: : I just had my 4 cly overhauled and I am about to put it back together. Someone told me that there is a special coating you put on the gaskets to help them seal. He said the head gasket? Is there a need for a sealing compound and is it just for the head gasket or all gaskets.

: : Thanks, Tony

: Regardless if the head gasket is copper or composition material, you SHOULD use Permatex Brand "Copper Coat" Head Gasket sealer. It comes in a spray can.Follow the directions and you won't have any problems.

: Since most of your other gaskets are paper or cork and not under combustion pressure, gasket cement/sealer isn't really necessary if the job is done right. Unless you are using metal covered gaskets, then again use the "Copper Coat".

: The only time I use "glue" is when I'm replacing a pan on an engine that's already installed in the car.Hope this helps.

An Old timer once told a friend to apply a thin coat of water pump grease on all the cork (now paper as well) gaskets.I never thought much of this until this friend's Model A split a piston and we had to tear the engine apart on the road. That engine came aprt without damaging a single gasket. In fact we had to re-use the cork pan gaskets becuse the new one were too dry to use.

Now, I use a thin coat of WP grease on all the paper and cork gaskets. It really work.
