: You've been running hard water in the thing, and it wore the tips off - or maybe there's a crack in the head, and one of the 36 horses got out and kick'd 'em off.

: All seriousness aside, though, I've seen severalimpellers damaged that way,and my theory is that the boss in the head that controls the end thrust wears, and lets the pump shaft and impeller move back into contact with the tapered bore in the head which is smaller in diameter than the impeller.

: The head that came with my '31 is worn almost 1/4" farth

er back than standard. there's only 1/16" to 3/32"clearance between the impeller and the tapered bore.I'm using a head that's a '41 vintage replacement unit with the inner boss only worn about 1/16".The end thrust should be about 0.010".

: If your end thrust is O.K. the pump might have been damaged in an earlier combination.I've always found that the biggest maintenance problem with an "A" is generally the former owner.

I wondered about the tips being filed back, but these were fresh breaks not chance to rust over yet. still puzzling.
Thanks.
