Hey DJ-
But don't waterpumps in the southern hemisphere turn the other way??

Good point - my suspicion is that the pump has plenty of capacity regardless of the clearance between the angled portion of the impeller tips, and the taper bore on the head BUT -

Do you have a handle on what the clearance should be??

In my head which still shows what appear to be original tooling marks on the taper bore and with an impeller that doesn't show signs of degeneration, AND the end play set per spec.I'm running about 1/8" (3mm) clearance from the tips back to the bore.

What's your experience??

I remember seeing my next door neighbor start a '37 ford flathead that he'd just rebuilt with water in the system but with the top hoses not joined to the radiator which was out.
When it fired, both the hoses straightened out, and threw water all the way to the hayloft in the barn. An impressive demonstration of pump capacity, and I'm glad he did it first so I didn't have to make the same mistake.
