FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT

If you folks can handle one more alignment question?
Why not insert a pin into the tread at the desired height,
(depending on what book you are using) measure, and then back the "A" up untill the pin is again at the desired height on the back side and measure again to check for the correct toe in adjustment?Or is there some fallacy to my thinking?
