G'Day Jim,
You got me scratching the old bone dome there a minute, but your idea sounds good as long as the measuring height you mention remains the same for both measurements. This method would give basically the same results as the spring gauge shown in Marco's posting of the Ford bulletins. For peace of mind you could always recheck at a couple of different positions on the wheel to ensure there's no discrepancy in the measurements.
P.S. Use Marco's book, his is supported with documentary evidence.
