Starter and flywheel just don't get along

Well I guess the header of this message just about said it all.Anyway, here lately on my 31 coupe the bendix keeps getting stuck on the flywheel and not releasing.I have to get out and "rock the boat" to get it to spring back into place.Yesterday I had to go as far as to remove the starter bolts and then rock the car again to get it to fly loose.Is this normal, what can I do to stop it, does it need shims, do I need a new spring, or what?Other than that the starter works great!
I'd like to thank everyone in advanced for the help.
