Rebuilding of transmission for 1930 Sport Coupe

I am a member of the Greater Houston Model "A" Ford Club, and I'm in the process of restoring the transmission of my April '30 Sport Coupe.

Symptom: the rectangular-shaped space on each shifting fork into which the shifting ball fits is worn from use.The shifting ball, however,is round and in good shape.

Question:If the forks are built up with weld and filed back to give flat surfaces, how much clearance should there be when the shifting ball is inside the rectangle (so to speak)? One source I talked to said .010", or so.Is that too tight? And, if not, how does one go about measuring such play?Or, am I being too precise, as long as the play isn't any more than a sixteenth of an inch, let's say?

Thanks for any input one might have!
