: Just got done a bit ago with that one.

: The actual play isn't too important as long as there is some.
: 0.010 is fine and you could check it with a feeler gage between the small ball and whatever else it's got to clear.0.030 wouldn't make that much difference.

: The thing you have to watch for is that the pockets in the forks must be in line (right to left)and matched for width (front to back) in the neutral position as established by the interlock detent pins.

I presume that this can only be checked once the unit is re-assembled?

: ALSO the pocket in each fork must be deep enough to allow the ball to pass on the non-pocketed sections of the other fork.

Not clear...

The pocket in each fork isn't as deep as the ball diameter so you must check everything with the whole shifter assembled, and generally dis-assemble (several times) to correct.

"Deep" - in this case - meaning the up-down measurement?

Make sure you have clearance at every extremity of the shift lever motion and eliminate tight spots.

: What you're looking for is smooth operation with a minimum of play.

: MAKE SURE you replace the interlock detent pins and spring that live between the shift rails to insure a good neutral reference unless they're already new.

: Although it didn't show up without disassembly, the larger ball on my shift lever was badly worn on its bottom surface causing the small ball to be positioned almost 0.2" too low between the forks, and the anti-rotate pin to actually be supporting the shift lever instead of the ball itself.I built up the large ball with weld and ground it back to round with a template. If I had it to do over again - I'd buy a repro.

Sacre bleu! The specs for the diameter of the shifting ball are 0.5", as I recall. Is there a specified diameter for the larger ball, or is it more nebulous, such as: large enough so that the smaller ball is centered (up and down) between the forks?

Thanks!
